3 Options for Educational Credit:
1. Certificate of Attendance- This certificate is available for no extra charge for the 6 hours of training during this
conference. It outlines the content and hours of instruction.
2. 0.6 CEUs will be available for an additional $20 fee. IACET (International Association for Continuing Education and
Training) CEUs are offered for this conference. Individuals wishing to earn CEUs are advised to check with their
certification body, licensure agency, and/or employer to determine if IACET CEUs can be used to satisfy specific

3. Graduate Credit- Workshop participants may choose to earn graduate credit from Silver Lake College for extending
the knowledge and skills gained in the workshop to an independent and authentic application of theory to practice within
his/her relevant educational and/or professional setting. Some workshops are available for either one (1) OR two (2)
graduate credits; other workshops are available only for one (1) graduate credit. Please refer to the credit registration
form and the syllabus regarding the credit options available.

Workshop Description and Objectives:
Students on the autism spectrum often present with difficulty regulating their feelings and interacting
socially. This workshop describes how to handle meltdowns and design effective behavior plans to
prevent these moments and reduce frustration and anxiety. The second part of the presentation details
strategies to motivate students to learn, ways to teach social skills, how to generalize skills into the natural
setting and increase acceptance and tolerance from peers. Information will be imparted though lecture,
interactive exercises, and video clips.
Learning objectives for participants:
-To understand the reasons for social skill deficits and disruptive behaviors.
-To learn strategies to deal effectively with meltdowns and be able to put together an effective behavior
plan to prevent frustrations.
-To understand how to put together a social skills training program in schools or at home.
-To learn ways to motivate verbal and non-verbal students to want to socialize.
-To learn several strategies for teaching and generalizing skills.
-To learn how to create programs for typical peers to accept students with disabilities and model positive
behaviors.

Jed Baker, Ph.D., is the Director of the Social Skills Training Project in Maplewood, New
Jersey. Their organization provides assessments and interventions for school-aged children
that have social skill difficulties and/or behavioral problems.
Dr. Baker has been a clinical psychologist since 1992. He is on the professional advisory
board of ASPEN (an information network for parents of children with Asperger Syndrome),
provides social skills training for students with pervasive developmental disorders and
learning disabilities. He directs and supervises social skills training for students at Millburn
Public Schools
In addition, Dr. Baker writes, lectures, and provides training across the country on the topic
