3 Options for Educational Credit:
1. Certificate of Attendance- This certificate is available for either the 6 hours (one day) or 12 hours (two days) of
training for this conference.  It outlines the content and hours of instruction.

2. Either 0.6 CEUs (for one day attendance) or 1.2 CEUs (for two day attendance) will be available for an additional $25
fee.  IACET (International Association for Continuing Education and Training) CEUs are offered for this conference.  
Individuals wishing to earn CEUs are advised to check with their certification body, licensure agency, and/or employer to
determine if IACET CEUs can be used to satisfy specific requirements. For the IACET provider directory,

3. Graduate Credit- Workshop participants may choose to earn graduate credit from Silver Lake College for extending
the knowledge and skills gained in the workshop to an independent and authentic application of theory to practice within
his/her relevant educational and/or professional setting. Some workshops are available for either one (1) OR two (2)
graduate credits; other workshops are available only for one (1) graduate credit. Please refer to the credit registration
form and the syllabi regarding the credit options available.

and related disorders (ASD) to the current 1 case per 110 individuals most recently identified
young adults with ASD. Unfortunately, the need for such services continues to far exceed the
available resources, leaving a generation of individuals with autism and their families in a
programmatic, financial, and personal limbo. This presentation will provide an overview of
effective transition programming- at any age- with the ultimate goal being a life of dignity,
competence, and quality. To this end, an overview and practical suggestions for transition
planning (inclusive of employment goals) will be presented along with issues related to
community based training, social competence, sexuality and quality of life concerns.    

After having attended this workshop, participants will be able to:
-Identify the components of a comprehensive transition plan
-Differentiate between social survival and social competence of the applications of both
-Discuss the importance of direct, intensive instruction in adaptive behavior if community
living is expected to be the outcome of an effective education
-Define the multiple constituent groups whose needs are to be meet in the employment
development process
-Identify the three primary components of sexuality
-Describe the individually determined components of an assessment of quality of life
Transitioning to Adulthood for Individuals with ASDs, with Peter Gerhardt, Ed.D.
with Jed Baker, Ph.D.
interacting socially. This workshop describes how to handle meltdowns and design effective
behavior plans to prevent these moments and reduce frustration and anxiety. The second part
of the presentation details strategies to motivate students to learn, ways to teach social skills,
how to generalize skills into the natural setting and increase acceptance and tolerance from
peers. Information will be imparted though lecture, interactive exercises, and video clips.

Learning objectives for participants:
-To understand the reasons for social skill deficits and disruptive behaviors.
-To learn strategies to deal effectively with meltdowns and be able to put together an effective
behavior plan to prevent frustrations.
-To understand how to put together a social skills training program in schools or at home.
-To learn ways to motivate verbal and non-verbal students to want to socialize.
-To learn several strategies for teaching and generalizing skills.
-To learn how to create programs for typical peers to accept students with disabilities and
model positive behaviors.
