"The Way I See It" and "Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger's
and High-Functioning Autism," with Temple Grandin, Ph.D.
From her innovative book, "The Way I See It," Temple Grandin will get down to the real issues
of autism- the ones parents, teachers and individuals on the spectrum face every day. She
offers helpful do's and don'ts, practical strategies and try-it-now tips, all based on her "insider"
perspective and a great deal of research. After lunch Temple will cover her book "Developing
Talents." This remarkable instruction is essential for individuals on the spectrum, along with
anyone who teaches, cares for or employs someone on the spectrum. She shows how to
apply her guidelines, suggestions and examples to career development in real life. A question
and answer period will be held after the last break and will cover a multitude of issues
concerning the autism spectrum.
Temple will cover:
-How and why people with autism think differently
-How sensory sensitivities affect learning
-Teaching people with autism to live in an unpredictable world
-Behaviors caused by a disability vs. just bad behaviors
-The search for suitable careers for individuals on the spectrum
-Developing social and communication skills
No More Meltdowns: Handling Challenging Behaviors & Teaching Social Skills,
with Jed Baker, Ph.D.
Students on the autism spectrum often present with difficulty regulating their feelings and
interacting socially. This workshop describes how to handle meltdowns and design effective
behavior plans to prevent these moments and reduce frustration and anxiety. The second part
of the presentation details strategies to motivate students to learn, ways to teach social skills,
how to generalize skills into the natural setting and increase acceptance and tolerance from
peers. Information will be imparted though lecture, interactive exercises, and video clips.
Learning objectives for participants:
-To understand the reasons for social skill deficits and disruptive behaviors.
-To learn strategies to deal effectively with meltdowns and be able to put together an effective
behavior plan to prevent frustrations.
-To understand how to put together a social skills training program in schools or at home.
-To learn ways to motivate verbal and non-verbal students to want to socialize.
-To learn several strategies for teaching and generalizing skills.
-To learn how to create programs for typical peers to accept students with disabilities and
model positive behaviors.
A limited block of rooms has been reserved for $99 plus tax per night. Please call the hotel to make your reservations today!
