Mental Illness & Autism Spectrum Disorders in School-Aged Children
March 18 - 19, 2008
Crystal Lake, IL
|
Childhood is a time of many changes, challenges and, at times, confusion. This is even more so for children with psychiatric disorders. In this seminar, we will overview the most common childhood psychiatric conditions, including mood (depression, bipolar), anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders (attention deficit/hyperactivity, oppositional defiant, conduct) and current medical treatments. At the end of the day, we will look at real world examples of behaviors a child may exhibit in the classroom, community or home and understand the possible mental health underpinnings of these behaviors.

Many individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have difficulty learning
through traditional teaching approaches. During this session we will explore how to
prepare students to grasp what teachers are instructing, and how to structure and
present the information to facilitate and motivate student understanding and
participation. We will also explore solutions to problems that interfere with learning and
performance for these children and adolescents. This session will include strategies for
students with ASD, Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) and Asperger's
Syndrome.
