Childhood is a time of many changes, challenges and, at times, confusion. This is even
more so for children with psychiatric disorders. In this seminar, we will overview the
most common childhood psychiatric conditions, including mood (depression, bipolar),
anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders (attention deficit/hyperactivity, oppositional
defiant, conduct) and current medical treatments. At the end of the day, we will look at
real world examples of behaviors a child may exhibit in the classroom, community or
home and understand the possible mental health underpinnings of these behaviors.
Mental Illness in Children, with Christopher Okiishi, M.D.

March 26
Children and adolescents with Asperger Syndrome (AS) can intrigue and confound us-
often simultaneously. Designed for participants with a basic knowledge of AS, this
workshop will present a framework that allows us to build upon strengths in order to
minimize challenges in the real world. Participants will learn accommodations,
modifications, and direct teaching strategies that optimize availability for learning and
enhance social cognition, communication, and emotional competence. The workshop
will emphasize practical strategies that can be used across school, home, and
community settings.
Asperger Syndrome: Beyond the Basics, with Teresa Bolick, Ph.D.
